28 August 1862 — Canford Manor, nr. Wimborne, Dorset
Thursday. 28th [August 1862]. Was called pretty early and at 9½ I and the M. started to see Lord Sidney Osborne at the Hive Parkstone. We called at the vicarage and took Mr & Lady L. Ponsonby with us. We arrived at the Hive at 10½ and found Lord S.G.O. & his daughter Emily waiting for us. I then went down to the beach and Miss B. lending me a bathing gown I bathed. When I got back to the house I found the M. discussing with SGO about the poor Lancashire cotton weavers– At about 12 we started home leaving Mr Ponsonby to go for a sail with S.G.O. It was very hot and sultry and we were glad to get home—which we did in time for luncheon. There was a short thunderstorm which however passed off soon. I wrote all the afternoon for S.H.S. I had a bad headache and did not go in to dinner. Lady L. Pon: came to dine– Mr Pon: came in the evening and they stayed till 11. (The Pynes went to Wales).
