13 January 1865 — Haverland Hall, nr. Norwich, Norfolk
Friday. 13th [January 1865]. The day passed away with singing etc and as it was raining we cd not go out. All the gentlemen went out shooting but Mr Portman. I played billiards with Miss A. & then waited about till T. Mr P. amused us & sang comics. After T. we drew the gentleman that were to take us to dinner & after some fun & changes I got Mr Portman & Mrs F. got Bogie. We had a very merry dinner when as Mrs F. was laughing she unluckily choked & nearly went into hysterics. I persuaded her to go up stairs where she got worse & I soothed her, gave her salvolatile & got her to sleep on my shoulder. We then got up & went down & people began to arrive. I suppose about 60 or 70– We danced in the dining room. We danced till about 5. I was introduced to Mr Elwin the once editor of the Quarterly.
