24 August 1869 — Baveno | |
Tuesday. 24th [August 1869]. We got up at 8 and I sent up to see if Susan wd breakfast with us at 9. She sent word she had passed a bad night & shd breakfast in bed. We breakfasted in our sitting room. Afterwards I went up to see Susan & found she had been very sick all night & meant to get up later. At 1 I went & had some luncheon (after having written letters to Bee & Mrs Austen. Hy Mr Corry & Mr Hambro also lunched and then we 4 went off at ½ past 2 to Isola Bella. There we saw the house wh is large but the centre still unfinished. They have many pictures there wh Hy said were poor things. They showed us amongst others a copy of our picture of Virgin & Child by Luini & copy of one Hy got Ivor. We then went over the gardens which were more worth seeing. The man remembered Henry of old and was very civil and gave me some flowers. Being excessively hot we kept in the shade & did not go over the whole. We rowed then to Pallanza but found we had not time to land so rowed straight back to dinner. After dinner I went up & sat with Susan who was better and on the sofa in the sitting room. I was glad to sit still as my head ached. At 8 I went down on to the terrace & found Hy sitting with Sigr Vigliani. After a while we all went up to Susan & sat there another hour & had brandy & seltzer &c. Susan sent me down some arrowroot before I got to bed. | |
