9 November 1869 — 21 Grafton Street
Tuesday. 9th [November 1869]. Very busy day. All my sisters came & Maria brought Bss Hambro to tea; directly after 5 tea I & Henry drove to Spurgeon’s Tabernacle where Hy gave a lecture on Pompeii. We got there very early & were shown into Mr Spur:’s room where Mr Haynes had got together the dissolving views wh were to illustrate the lecture. Mr Spurgeon sent Henry a letter to say he was too ill to be there himself but his brother James wd take the chair. Mrs James was there (she was a Miss Burgoyne (one of Sir J. B’s daughters). She took me into the tabernacle & we sat together in the 1st gallery. The M & S. appeared on the scene so I sent them word to join us. The lecture took abt 1 hour & ½ & was very successful. Henry made some remarks on his giving up the 1st Commissionership & upon the speech Mr Ayrton had made the day before stating his views of that office. He then referred to his connection of 9 years with Southwark as their M.P. & took leave of them. In the middle of the lecture Monty & Hippy Damer came & went on the platform but as the building was darkened for the dissolving views I did not see them till the end. There was a large attendance abt 5 or 6000. We afterwards went to supper at Monty’s at Vica St & Connie & Kate & Cecil & Charlie were there. Blanche stayed away on acct of her cold. We went home early as Henry was tired. Having got up the whole lecture to day in the midst of all his packing.
