22 November 1869 — Paris
Monday. 22nd [November 1869]. Directly after breakfast I & Mr Clark & Henry went out shopping. I came back at 12 & found Cornelia had come to take me out with her. We shopped together & at 3 I came in by appointment as Comte Cortè had promised to come & see us & tell us abt Madrid where he had been– When he was gone I went out with Henry for a walk. We dined with Olozaga & there met Lord Howden, the Portuguese minister & all Olozaga’s attachés but there were no other ladies. After dinner the gentlemen smoked Spanish-fashion in the drawing room & we were taken up to the private apartments that we might have some music as there was no piano in the reception rooms. At abt 10 we went to the English Embassy where we found Lady Emily & Odo Russell. They are staying with Ld Lyons, & have arrived to day, on their way back to Rome. We stayed there a very short time. We heard there that Mr Talbot had refused the Peerage wh dashes all Mr Clark’s plans for Parliament. Found Mr Clark up when we got back & gave him this news. I think he is disappointed. We took leave of him as he goes to England by an early train tomorrow.
