23 December 1869 — Madrid
Thursday. 23rd [December 1869]. Spanish lesson again. The messenger arrived from England. I received a note from Maria and a copy of Tennyson’s last poems “The Holy Grail” &c—so I spent the morning chiefly in reading. At 2 we went out driving leaving a few cards & coming home got out in the Calle des Tudescos and sent the carriage home. We poked about in this & the neighbouring street in hopes of finding some furniture but were unsuccessful. Coming home we met Mr Ffrench. At tea we had a call from M. & Mme Emilio Bernard. She is rather nicelooking and talkative & agreeable. We went to the Opera to wh we had asked the Hunts & found them there. Mr Ashburnham also came. We heard the Sonnambula very badly given– The prima donna being a Russian Massini I think who sang pretentiously & dreadfully out of tune even tho’ the whole Opera was transposed a note for her.
