19 January 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 19th [January 1870]. In the afternoon I went out for a drive with Henry & we took a walk in the Prado. At ½ past 7 we dined at Prims. It was a great official dinner & excessively dull. I was taken in by M. Zorilla the new President of the Cortes who hardly spoke a word to me all dinner time. I sat between him & Prim who was rather more pleasant. I was amused to hear him talk of his wife as “my Countess”. He said she is “bonne enfant” & deserves anything I can do to make her happy as I have caused her “haut de peines” thro’ my politics. After sitting more than 2½ hours at dinner (having gone in an hour late at ½ past 8) we were glad to rise from table. The gentlemen went to Prim’s study to smoke & we sauntered abt the different immense rooms & admired the Prims bedroom thro’ which the gentlemen had to pass to go to the smoking room.
