6 March 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 6th [March 1870]. We got up rather late & breakfasted abt ½ past 10. By some mistake they did not tell us Mr Whyte had come & so we were late for church. Lady Ely came to church & she & I stayed– After church she came upstairs & sat a little while & I arranged to call for her in the eveng & take her to Mme Montijo’s. She then went away & we went to get some luncheon as soon as we got [in] & at ¼ to 2 went in the carriage to call for Mrs Hunt & went to the Concert at the Circo. We had some difficulty in findg our box at 1st and at last got there & found it was quite at the top. We were therefore a little late & did not hear anything of the 1st piece “Prometheus” but enjoyed all the rest excessively. Mr Ff. joined us then & Mr Hunt. The Duke de Montpensier was at the concert. I saw him for the first time. He is very unprepossessing—being fat—rather bloated & red faced. We walked home thro’ the crowded Prado & coming out of the Circo the stair being very narrow a little man got a push at the top & tumbled passed me & fell right on Henry who turned round furious to abuse him when the man whose head was saved & the fall broken turned & uttered profuse apologies & thanks to Hy for having saved him. The Hunts M. Ff. & Senr Argaiz walked home with us & at the door we met Senr Canovas de Castillo who had been calling so we asked him in & they all came in & had tea. Mr Ff & Mr Ash: came & dined with us & afterwards we went at 10 to the Hotel de Principes picked up Lady Ely & went on to Montijo’s. We found the old lady’s cold better & she stayed up till 1– There was an immense crush of people & one saw a great many of one’s friends & at last it got too crowded & one saw no one so Lady Ely & I went thro’ the conservatory & waited in hopes of getting some tea—but we soon gave it up & went home.
