3 January 1871 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 3rd [January 1871]. Wrote a couple of notes & then went out to breakfast at Marshal Serrano’s– Found the Dss not very well having of late spent an anxious time. She said that for the last 4 nights before the arrival of the King & since the murder of Prim the Regent had sat up in his uniform ready in case there was a republican rising. She told me that the King had been to make a call upon her at 6 o’clock yesterday & that she had found him charming & very kind & simple & he had stayed till 7 oclock. I stayed working with her till ½ past 2. At 1 the Regent came in in his uniform & said “Antonia [illegible words] al Palacio à formas en Ministerio”– At ½ past 2 I went to see Mme Karnicky for the first time since the birth of the baby, sat with her an hour & then came home– Found Adeline & Arthur out having gone to Atocha to try & see Prim’s body– The crowd was too great so she came home & brought Mme de Martino & Arthur Messrs Blanc & Sonnino joined them. We dined alone & went to bed early. | |
