19 August 1871 — Cologne
Saturday. 19th [August 1871]. When we woke at 6 it was raining so hard that we almost thought we would give up going up the Rhine by steamer but take the train. However we saw a little wee bit of blue sky which encouraged us to hope it was going to clear—so we made up our minds to it and we went down to the river & got on board the great American steamer. It did not rain much and tho’ it was rather cold at first we were very comfortable & glad of our lunch at 11. The first part of the journey was not particularly pretty or remarkable but as we got on to Bonn it got more picturesque & beautiful. At Coblentz Mr & Mrs Norman & her 3 children got on board; they are going to Mayence & thence ultimately to Ammergau to see the passion play which is performed there by the villagers at Ammergau every 10 years. After Coblentz the scenery was beautiful what with the vine covered banks & hills crowned with the most picturesque old castles some in ruins & others restored & inhabited. At 5 we dined & had some delicious fresh creamy salmon caught off the Lorelei rock– We got to Mayence abt 7 in the eveng when it was quite dark & Alice & I sat together & had a long talk in the dark & were very happy. We went to the Hotel d’Angleterre where we were very comfortable & went at once to bed.
