16 September 1871 — Venice
Saturday. 16th [September 1871]. We went in the morng to Salviati’s shop & to Vianelli’s to get our photos wh are very successful & we went to pay some visits at the Library & Sigr Lorenzi showed me the rare copy of the lace book they have. We also saw Signr Labris the director of the picture gallery & then went home to lunch. At ¼ to 2 we took Hill with us to take her to Murano but Henry & I first paid a visit to Pss Clary who was at home; she invited us to tea tomorrow night. We went from her house to Salviati’s at Murano & there spent the afternoon. Dined at 6½ & at 8 Mr R. Brown came to us & we went with him to his house & had tea with him in his dining room wh is painted all round with lifesized people in masks. He gave us excellent tea & cakes but touched nothing himself—indeed I have never seen him eat & his meals are a mystery. We sat talking with him till past ten & he brought out his Don Quijote & explained to me some of his crochets & told us some rather incoherent ghost stories.
