23 October 1871 — Madrid
Monday. 23rd [October 1871]. Directly after breakfast Henry & I marched off to the dentist’s & then we went to the Modern Exhibition of Pictures near the Fuente Castellana. We saw there a heap of rubbish; there were only a few pretty small pictures “de genre” & some portraits by Palmaroli amongst wh were mine & Henry’s & Mme Bauers. He also had a very large picture “the 3 de Mayo”—or the day after the massacre by the French & represents 3 women in attitudes of despair over their dead friends & a fine figure of a man standing over a grave with his back turned leaning on his spade as tho’ overcome by the horror of his task. The sky is windy & the whole picture fine tho’ not pleasing. Rosales’ picture, & rough sketch very unfinished of “Lucretia” did not at all please me tho’ it was awarded the 1st prize. After luncheon we took a ride in the Casa de Campo. In the eveng a few people came—several English amongst them Col & Mrs Daniell fm Gibraltar (She sister of Col. Philip Smith) Mr Crace & Mr Von Glehn, Mr Griffin.
