30 March 1872 — San Sebastian
Saturday. 30th March [1872]. Copied all the morning for Henry– Got letters from Eng. We lunched at 1½ & at 2 Genl Concha came to us & we went driving with him to the Duke of Bailen’s house close by– The gardens are pretty or will be so when the trees grow up. There is a French garden there & wonderful attempts at lakes water falls, cascades &c. The house is small & bad & a new one is to be built next year. The gardener gave me lilacs, bankshire roses & on our departure a lovely bouquet. The Genl took us then to see his daughters & his own villas—very prettily situated but miserably furnished, we then drove back to the town & walked up the rock towards the castle to see the tombs of the English officers who died here in the Civil war & in the Peninsula War. The spot is a lovely one & the view of the open sea is lovely—as there one is completely out of the harbour. The Genl left us in the town & we went home to dinner at 6½. We bought a bit of the steel inlaid with silver & gold work which is made at Eibar at Zuluaga’s work—a lighter box to send to Arthur. Spent evening writing & reading. Genl Concha is El Marquis de la Habana. He told us he had been Q. Isabella’s last Minister that when she was here she heard of the revolution & made him undertake a Govt & go to Madrid– As soon as they heard of the defeat at Alcolea, & the rising at Burgos & elsewhere the Q. left the country & the Genl. finding himself alone had to hide himself—there was not one person to stand by him to help the Queen–
