16 July 1872 — Roehampton
Tuesday. 16th July [1872]. Maria lent us her carriage & we drove up to Langham House to luncheon & then went down by train to Milton Court to stay with the Rates. Got there abt 6 & took a walk round the garden & fields. They have just bought the house & surrounding land from Mr Evelyn of Wotton. Kinglake went down there by the same train as we did. He seems still very depressed & was very blind but was as gentle & charming as ever. Mr Rate came by a later train. After dinner we talked & I sang a little.
