11 August 1872 — Champfer
Sunday. 11th [August 1872]. We went to St Moritz & I drank 3 glasses—& then Maria & I went on to the English church. It is a pretty little church & was very full. A great many of the country people came to look on– We went back to Champfer in the omnibus & got in time for 1 o’cl: dinner. In the afternoon we took an Einspänner & drove to Pontresina to call on Dr & Mrs Smith. We found them just going to dinner so we did not stay long. There are lovely views of the Rosegg & Morteratsch glaciers– The Smiths were at the “Couronne”– We made the Smiths promise to come & dine with us on Tuesday & went back to Champfer. On the road a carriage passed us & a gentleman stood up & waved to us so we stopped the carriage & Hy jumped down—on approaching the gentleman who came to meet him Henry did not know him & said “A mistake perhaps”– The answer was “No—Mrs Layard” & by his voice I recognised Sir Rd Musgrave whom I had not seen for years & whom Henry did not know. He came & spoke to me & said he was staying at Pontresina & he & Lady M. had just been to call on me.
