20 October 1872 — Madrid
Sunday. 20th [October 1872]. Church in morning. A very damp day. After lunch Henry, Lord S. & I started for a walk. It came on to rain so Lord S. & I stood under a doorway while Henry went on. It cleared a little so Lord S. & I went on & by dint of now & then taking refuge under a doorway we took a long walk & got home very muddy & bedraggled– Mr Chadwick M.P., Mr Hepworth Dixon, Mr Hamilton (Times Corres.), Messrs Ff & Sey dined with us. Mr Dixon seems a most odious man cheeky vulgar & upstarted. He harps upon a cock & a bull account of a place he visited called Medina del Campo. He pretends that it is a place utterly unknown—full of Roman ruins & the most remarkable place he has seen after Rome. Mr Chadwick managed to retain his “H’s” during the 1st part of dinner but as he warmed with wine they all disappeared. He boasted that altho’ he had never tasted wine till he was 40 he could now drink more than any 3 men– I must say however, that the result is painful.
