5 November 1872 — Madrid
Tuesday. 5th [November 1872]. I wrote in the morning & after lunch fetched Louise Aylton & we went for a drive & left some cards & then took a walk in the Retiro. Henry’s cold still bad. Henry had written a note to Mr Whyte expostulating at the way he manage service there having been no wine ready for the Sacrament on Sunday last. Abt 6 in walks poor Mr Whyte come to answer the note in person. He seemed in a great flurry & at last ended by saying “I can’t go away from Madrid for if I do my family must starve”—& thereat he burst out crying & almost into hysterics. I rushed out for some wine which restored him a little & he went away better. It was most painful to see an old man with white hair in this state but he seems to be getting almost childish & hardly knows how to direct the service. Sir C. Murray Adee & Weisweiller & Riaños dined.
