30 December 1872 — Madrid
Monday. 30th [December 1872]. Henry rather worse. I had to help him by writing to his dictation & we did some translation that way. Mr Newton went to the armoury in the morng & after lunch Mr Riaño took him to the gallery. Henry was not able to appear at our dinner. It was very successful—very animated and amusing. The Riaños came early. Ittersum came very tipsy & got worse here– He pursued me & Emilia till we were quite frightened & could hardly get down the stairs the porter had to help him out. I got to bed abt 3. Found Henry had not been able to sleep a wink for the noise—his room being so near–
