22 January 1873 — Madrid
Wednesday. 22nd January [1873]. Worked all the morng at tree & in the afternoon by the help of Mr Haggart put on all the tapers– The Prim children making a mistake in my invite came at 4½ instead of 7. Juanito went away to the Palace to see some of the King’s A.D.C.s & Isabelita stayed with Hill. I dressed early & we dined in the Boudoir at 6. At 7 the children began to arrive & altogether 47 came. The tree was lighted at abt ¼ to 8 & then the children had supper & danced till 10½. The Tetuan children (3 of them) came & one of them not being very well fell asleep in the ball room in his chair– One of his aunts (who had charge of him) moved his chair near the piano that he might lean his head against it but I did not like to see him so & took him up in my arms & laid him on a sofa where he slept for the rest of the eveng. The Conte de Almina & his boy were here last as his carriage did not come till 11 & the poor child sat bolt upright & was as quiet as possible. In answer to my questions he informed me he was “Alfonsino” (he is abt 3 years old) & hoped some day to be in the “Congresso”.
