22 May 1873 — Madrid
Thursday. 22nd [May 1873]. The messenger arrived from Lisbon—no letters from London for me. Then came a despatch from Lord Granville very complimentary to me upon my having assisted in Serrano’s escape. I did not go out. Mr Drury (the messenger) & Mr Napier dined with us & then we went to the Canitz. Henry played whist– We had taken the Aylton girls with us. I had a long talk with the Marquis de Sofraga—the 1st time he has addressed me tho’ I have known him 4 years. He told me he had really hopes D. Carlos wd be in Madrid by the autumn– He said if so I need not fear the Inquisition & that D. Carlos wd put the priests in their places & diminish their numbers wh he could easily do having the help & sanction of the Pope—he said that Protestants (were Spaniards) wd be permitted to continue their religion & the Bible to be sold– I doubt these things– I think the priests will prove too strong for D. Carlos. It was a hot night tonight.
