26 February 1874 — Madrid
Thursday. 26th [February 1874]. It was a very stormy disagreeable day & I did not go out. Aurelie came at three to play duetts with me & I expected the Dss de la Torre to come & see me but she sent me word that she could not come & when Henry came in he told us that there was very bad news from the North, that Moriones had been beaten with heavy losses near Santander & that Serrano is to start this evening to take the command. The Riaños dined with us & we had the usual quartett music in the eveng.
