16 May 1874 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 16th [May 1874]. We got up at ½ past 7. Breakfasted at 8½ & went to the train calling for Emilia. We met Aurelie, Ittersum—Maffei—Radolinsky & Carnide & went by the 9.40 to Aranjuez getting there abt 11. We took Giovanni to see after our food & went straight to the gardens of the Palace where we left Giovanni & the food & went to see over the Palace. There is nothing remarkable there except a room of Buen Retiro china—rather prettier that the one at Madrid. It was so hot in the gardens that we found it cold indoors. Aurelie, Carnide & Ittersum waited in the garden & somehow we missed them on coming out & when we had spread our luncheon we had to look for them & were some time finding them. In the meanwhile Giovanni cut his finger & then poured a whole lot of juice out of the cherry tart over me. I was obliged to wash it (luckily a white pique) with Maffei’s help & hang the skirt on a bush to dry– At last we began our repast sitting on the ground under the trees. While Giovanni was packing up we sauntered about & sat by the river & at last got into our carriages. Aurelie, Carnide, Maffei & I in one carriage & the rest in the other. We drove to the Casa del Labrador to see it & then about Aranjuez—up the Calle del Gobernador, a shady grove, & the Calle de las Rosas but the roses are not yet well out. Abt 6 we pulled up, got out & sitting by the road side made tea boiling the water in the little kettle Ivor had made for me. It took some time to boil tho’ Maffei made a small bonfire but when made it was excellent– We packed up our things again & drove to the station returning to Madrid by the 7.30 train but did not get home till 10.30. Maffei & Carnide came home to supper with us. | |
