10 March 1875 — Madrid
Wednesday. 10th [March 1875]. At 2¼ we went to the Palace. Our carriages were not allowed to drive into the ct yard as in the time of Amadeo. It was a fine day & quite hot. On the stairs we met the Duke de Sesto. We went to the Princess’s appartments which were the same as Serrano used when he was Regent & are called those of the D. of Montpensier. We met the Koudriaffskys & walked with them. K. declared that we were going to be recd one by one. Henry said he thought we shd be recd “in circle” but we should see. Sure eno’ we were all put in a row & the Infanta came in & like the Queen spoke to us all in turn—I standing 1st as Henry is next to the Ambr having been in the country longer than any of the Gt Powers– The Infanta seemed shy & said almost the same to every one but she soon got thro the business. Maffei appeared late having come from the King. We got home again by 3 having only been ¾ hour coming & going. Bernadine & Mme Aylton called. At 4 Henry & I went to drive in the Retiro. It was too warm for me to care to walk. As we came home we met Maffei who was furious at what had happened at the Palace. He said that the Min for F. A Castro had forgotten him & that by mistake he was shown in to the King who was very amiable & he had to introduce himself & had not got the letter to present to HM as Castro had it. That from the King he had to rush to the Infanta & appear late at her reception. The Infanta is very plain.
