27 October 1875 — Madrid
Wednesday. 27th [October 1875]. On awaking Hill gave us the news that Mrs Phipps has a son born in the night. It appears that at 2 in the morng Mr P. came & woke up the servants to borrow linens &c as Mrs Phipps had nothing prepared. Mrs Beale also got up & went to help. Mrs Hill had been fetched from Lady Walshams & all had gone well. I had to allow Mrs Beale to go back & stay & help to take care of the baby. I went to breakfast with Dss de la Torre & then to Lady Walshams to see Mrs Hill but she was out. On the way home I met her & told her she might keep Mrs B. she asked me to go & tell Mr Phipps wh I did. I found the house in confusion & people putting down carpets. I saw the baby who is very tiny. In the eveng we went to the Bauers.
