31 December 1875 — Madrid
Friday. 31st [December 1875]. Walked with Henry in the afternoon & we went to see the Greindls & then on to the Riaños– At 5 the Dss de la Torre came to call with 4 of the children & I gave them all tea. When they went Hatzfeldt came & sat chatting some time. In the eveng we went to the Bauers & Henry left me & went for an hour to Ludolf’s party which was a mixture of a child’s party– He came back to see the New Year in at the Bauers. When the clock struck the servants handed hot Punch & Bauer came & drank his wife’s health & kissed her hand. This was the signal for a general shaking of hands and clinking of glasses. There were a lot of usual habitues of the house—all men. I was the only lady. At ¼ past 12 we returned home.
