15 February 1876 — Madrid
Tuesday. 15th [February 1876]. Stayed in bed all morng & got up to go to the opening of the Cortès at 1.30. Wore a high white satin with diamonds & feathers in head. The King opened the Cortès in Person. The Infanta sat also on the dais. She wore a high blue silk dress with a train trimmed with grey shaded leaves. Was attended by Marquesa Sta Cruz & Marquesa de Monistrol. The King in uniform read his speech very well. It took abt 10 minutes & then he bowed & left. There were many “Vivas” but they were led by a deputy who rose, shouted & threw up his arms. Mme Ratazzi was in a tribune above with the Dss of Bailen. She had asked for a place with us but we all said if she had one we wd not go & so it was refused her on wh she sent to complain to the President of the Chambers who sent again to Silva Alegre who regretted he had no room for her. As soon as the King & Pss went out we all ran to see what we could of the procession from the windows wh had been kept for us & were in time to see the Infanta in her carriage wh was a very curious old one. The “voiture de respect” of the King wh was the tortoiseshell carriage a present of the 1st Napoleon—& the King in his carriage wh has on it an enormous crown & sceptre. The rest of the procession had gone before. We got home as quick as we cd & I got back to my sofa having a bad headache. Emilia came to see me at 6. Henry went to the Bauers in the eveng & I got early to bed again.
