4 September 1876 — Blackheath
Monday. 4th [September 1876]. Henry went up to town in the morning. Hill & I started abt ½ past 2 to go to town to meet Henry & to go to Tunbridge to stay with Thomson Hankeys– As the road was being mended the cab could not get by & having to turn back & go another way we missed the train & had to wait for another. We had a very tiresome man who insisting upon making me pay 3/ for the cab. We had just 7 minutes at Charing X to change into the Tunbridge train. The Hankey carriage met us & took us to Shipton Grange. Mrs Grenfell & her niece besides 3 or 4 other people dined. Mrs Grenfell is ½ Spanish & she & I talked Spanish together. She is still very handsome & very lively & amusing– I sang Spanish songs wh delighted her– She has 11 children & 3 nieces—& is wonderfully energetic.
