26 October 1876 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 26th October [1876]. Wrote & worked. Went out riding in Casa de Campo. Lovely day & hot sun– Came in to tea. In the eveng we went to the Serranos—for an hour– Found a great many people there—but few I knew. At abt 12 this morng there was a tremendous noise near our house wh turned out to be an explosion at the barracks of San [illegible word]. It appears as the artillery was starting to go practising the wheel came off an ammunition wagon & 32 shells exploded 3 artillery men were killed & 16 wounded. | |
