Friday. 3rd [November 1876]. Got up late. Messenger (Capt Seymour) arrived from Eng: Henry got out of patience with the continual noise of beating of carpets outside the house that he wrote a note to Sr Calderon Collantes the Min: for F.A. saying that as when little Protestant children sung in their schools & churches the Govt had power to stop them on the plea that they disturbed the neighbours, he hoped the Govt had also power to stop the beating of carpets wh disturbed us—& which had now been going on for 2 years—that Henry had written to all the Authorities & cd get no redress—that in all civilized towns people were obliged to take their carpets outside the town &c &c– In a couple of hours came a furious note from C. Collantes who rose at once to the fly—saying Protestant children were allowed to sing &c &c but that he would enquire into the carpet affair. He afterwards sent 4 letters promising it shd be stopped. In the eveng Henry went to Canovas’ reception. | |
