14 December 1876 — Madrid
Thursday. 14th December [1876]. Went out walking with Emilia from 10 to 11.30—went poking abt in book stalls bought nothing. Painted, Esqui came for a few minutes. I went out driving left cards & met Henry & brought him home. Mme de Salm came to tea. After tea Henry went to his room to write & I also wrote till dressing time. We went to the Bauers in eveng. Albareda was very amusing on the subject of Bullfighting. He considered that “Montes” was the last great torero—& since then the decadence had set in. He told us that his father old Albareda was a breeder of bulls & he had therefore been a great deal in the Bullring. He told a story how when he was quite a boy his father bought a faja or sash the best he could find in Cadiz & sent the boy Albareda to offer it to Montes—when he rang at the door & told his errand to the woman who opened—she told him that Montes was asleep & no one dared disturb him—but that Albareda might wait if he liked on the chance of Montes waking. After sitting some little while the woman came & said that Montest had moved—& that they thought he was waking. She went in to Montes told him Albareda wanted to see him & the boy was allowed to go in. Montes lay with his back to him—& only turned his head to ask what he wanted. Alb. made a pretty little speech saying his father hoped he wd accept the faja & wear it that day at the bullfight. Montes said “Lay it on the bed & tell your father I am much obliged”—turned his head round & spoke no more—the boy Albareda retired delighted at the condescension of the gt man—“Si se daba mucho tono” (He had a great air with him) said Albareda. Henry begged him to write a bullfight romance—no one cd do it better.
