12 June 1877 — Therapia | |
Tuesday. 12th [June 1877]. I got up early & had my Turkish lesson at 9. At 10 we started to go to Breakfast with Ahmet Vefik Pasha & took the Davies with us. When we got there we began to fear he did not expect us as he was not visible. It turned out that he did expect us but that he had been into town & had only just returned. He took us to the top of his tower wh is part of the fortress built by the original Turks who took Constantinople & saw the apartment in it which is called Sultan Mohammeds. The Pasha told us that this tower has been used to hold a garrison until 40 years ago. We returned to the house to breakfast. We eat off a regular Turkish table with turned up edges like our trays– We had innumerable dishes all brought in curious order the fish being towards the end. It was impossible even to taste them all. What I liked best was mahallebi a dish of rice & cream. We went afterwards to the harem & had ices & then to the garden & did not start home till after 2. | |
