12 January 1878 — Constantinople
Saturday. 12th January [1878]. The Russians are advancing to Philippopolis & people are beginning to leave Adrianople & come down here. Major de Winton made arrangements to receive a lot of them, feed & lodge them. He told us he had taken in 1470 people into an empty house given the Compassionate Fund for the Turks—snow expected in the night. It snowed & blew hard all day. Awful weather for the poor souls. We went to dine with the Reuss. A diplomatic dinner—the Dolez, Zichy & his son, the Dutch Minister whom I saw for the 1st time & who got “screwed” as is his wont. Bad food & not a very well furnished house. Arthur dined with the Genl at the sporting Club.
