7 February 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 7th February [1878]. Cutting out day for Refugees. No one came so Mrs de W. worked alone. Mme Fernandez called on me also the Mercets & Raabs & C. Hansons. News from Gallipoli that hospitals are in want of mattrasses so I sent to beg Mr Young to come wh he did after dinner. Dr Leslie returned in very bad state from illtreatment from the Russians who took all the English Red Crescent & Cross Drs & almost killed them with the most brutal treatment. Ahmet Vefyk P. came to lunch & showed us the seal of office he wears in a diamond set purse round his neck. The seal is plain gold with the Sultan’s cypher & has to be worn night & day by the Vizier. On a Sultans accession 2 are made one being kept on the Monarch & when he dies a bar is cut across the 2 seals & they are laid by.
