9 February 1878 — Constantinople
Saturday. 9th [February 1878]. Henry went early off to see Ahmet Vefyk in the morning being tired I did not get up to breakfast. The Messenger came in. As I was sitting at work Henry came & said “The Fleet is coming up.” He had heard that they were on their way. He sent Mr Sandison to get the order from the Porte to let them thro. To our astonishment Ahmed Vefyk refused permission. Walked in the garden with Henry—great excitement. Mr Sandison & Mr Elliot dined with us—all went away directly after & the Genl & I played billiards. Many came to see Henry & half a doz more came to have the news confirmed. Henry expects there will be a row at the Dardanelles if the Fleet insists upon coming up. Lady Kemball arrived yesterday & called today. Mrs de Winton went to Candilli for the night.
