18 April 1878 — Gulf of Izmit, on board the Helicon
Thursday. 18th [April 1878]. Breakfast at 9. I began a sketch of the “Cockatrice” but could not do very much. At 11 we went on shore to the town after Henry had paid his visit to the Adl. We were recd by the Capt of the port & all the soldiers collected & presented arms & as we walked we were followed by ½ the population. After wandering thro’ the Bazaar wh were small & dirty we walked up the hill to the Sultan’s kiosque. We were glad to sit & rest there & look at the beautiful view with the fine ships lying at anchor below. We then returned on board & lunched. Afterwards the Adl came & fetched me & Henry in his barge towed by the steam pinnace & took us down to a small kiosque of the Sultans further down. It was a favorite resort of Sultan Abdul Aziz & is a kind of wooden cottage very much out of repair. We walked up to the little copse behind it & looked for flowers but did not find many. Returned to tea at the Helicon. Went to dine with the Adl at 7½ sat between him & Capt Grubbe. Met the Govr of Izmit who is a nice little man. He told us there was a ministerial crisis at Consple & that Ahmed Vefyk was out & Said P. also. Henry was thinking of returning home tomorrow. He recd a long cyphered telegram wh he said wd probably decide it– The Gov. was anxious to accompany us on board the Helicon to help to decipher it! Henry finally decided to remain till Saturday.
