25 April 1878 — Constantinople
Thursday. 25th [April 1878]. Got up late. The Kashgar Envoy came to lunch. Directly after, Henry & I drove down to Dolmabaghcheh & got into the caique and went to Hyssar to call on Ahmed Vefyk P. whom we found in but he was not well eno’ to come down the stairs & he received us in a small room outside the harem where he was on a very broad divan with a raised thing in the middle covered with a cloth wh served for a table & one could lie all round it. He was in flowing garments in Oriental style. After a while he took me into the harem & by signs & the help of one of the married daughters who understood a little French we managed to get on till the Pasha returned for me. We went on to Kuskunjuk to call on English Saïd P. He has a splendid yali. The Reuss’ were leaving his door when we arrived and we found him at home in a curious kind of dishabille—military red trousers—no waistcoat & a rough black pea jacket wh might have met together before he grew so stout. He took me into the Harem across a small garden. His wife was very handsome & pleasant looking & seemed intelligent. They had one little girl who they insisted upon pulling out of bed to see me—she came with red eyes complaining of headache & sore throat & when released returned to bed.
