9 May 1878 — Therapia | |
Thursday. 9th [May 1878]. Was in the garden all the morning directing the sailor from the Helicon who came to paint the garden seats &c also Giuseppi (gardener) who was making alterations in the trellis work on the guards’ cottage. Saïd P. called just after luncheon & brought me some photos from the Sultan of his children & nephews. We ordered the horses at 3 and as we were starting the Persian Minister called & I went out without Henry with the Genl, Mr Kennedy & Capt. McCalmont. We went by the upper road to the Aqueduct but the ride was spoilt by the quantities of dead cattle wh lay abt in all directions wh had belonged to the poor refugees. We returned by the Buyukdéré road wh is all cut up by the passage of artillery. When we got home we found P. & Pss Reuss calling having come en mouche. Gave them tea. Messrs Ken: Ash: Cartwright & Ld George dined with us. In the evening we played whist. | |
