6 June 1878 — Therapia | |
Thursday. 6th [June 1878]. Henry went to town in the mouche. The Adl & Mr Winsloe went off to stay with Baker P. at the camp where he is. Mrs Arthur H. came to call with Mrs H. Guarracino. At 4 I had to dress & at 5.30 we went off in the Antelope taking with us, P. Labanoff, Mr Dolez, Mme Herbert, M. Condouriotis, M. Galvagna & the Fourniers. The current was so strong we had some difficulty in starting. We got happily to Zichy’s in the broad daylight. Had a carriage to meet us & took Fournier & Labanoff in our carriage. At the bottom of the hill leading to the Austrian Embassy, a very steep bit Fournier insisted upon getting out & walking. His ladies came in chairs. We had all the heads of mission except d’Ehrenhoff at dinner Mme d’E. being very ill again. After the usual dinner with servants arrayed in gorgeous Hungarian costumes we went & sat in the garden wh was lighted up with lanterns & there we had coffee the gentlemen smoked & the ladies chatted until abt 10 when we left & went to Top-khaneh to find our boats & return to the Antelope. There was a piano in the deck cabin and so I sang Spanish songs & Galvagna attempted also to sing & then Mlle Fournier feebly tried piano duets with me—so we passed the time till we arrived home & parted. | |
