31 December 1878 — Constantinople
Tuesday. 31st [December 1878]. Had my singing lesson. In the afternoon Mrs Willy, May & I set out on foot to look for presents for the New Year. Went to the Bon Marché & to Haydon’s. Dreadful walking & the streets crowded. In the evening we had a small party consisting of Hatzfeldt & Nelly, Zichy, the Washingtons with 2 children, the Willy Hansons, Hilda & Cecil Hanson, the d’Ehrenhoffs, our Embassy & student Dragomans. We played Snap Dragon—& the great amusement was to see what colour Jerry wd be when the salt was added & we all became green– It was found that he did not change. We then danced a valse, I playing—& then had just till 11.30 when we went to supper & drank to the New Year & each other & then went to bed.
