1 February 1879 — Constantinople
Saturday. 1st February [1879]. Henry was better & up but not very well. However he had to go to the Sultan. Just as he was leaving Ahmed Vefyk came to see us & stayed with me & lunched with me & May. Mrs Walker called after lunch; she left abt 2 & then I laid down for a rest till 5. At ¼ 10 Mme Mantilla, May & I went to the Jewish mask ball of wh I was patroness at the French theatre. When I went in they played “God save the Queen.” It is a very dirty theatre & the whole affair seemed to me dingy & dull. However they got a lot of money & were pleased. May & I returned home at 12.
