27 June 1879 — Therapia | |
Friday. 27th [June 1879]. Busy all day arranging for the garden party. I dressed in black satin with diamonds & pearls on acct of the mourning for the poor Prince Imperial. By the time I was dressed after lunch & went to the garden I found a good many Pashas arrived. The Persian Ambr had kindly lent me a tent of silk & embroidery wh Capt. Pusey had put up for me where I stood to receive. A great many people came—some say 400. The Sultan had sent 2 days before to say that hearing I was going to have a fête he wd send me his band wh was the best in the country but he begged I wd not tell anyone lest he shd be expected to do the same to others. We were in some state of anxiety as the band did not arrive till late. The weather also caused us some alarm as it blew hard all night : during the morng so that no one cd come in caiques & many were prevented coming at all. Abt 5 2 royal carriages drove up containing 2 young Princes son of the present Sultan & his nephew, son of Abdul Assiz. They came with Mener Bey, the Gd Master of the ceremonies– Baker P. (whom the Sultan made his ADC on this occasion) & Zukki Bey an intelligent young ADC speaking French & English. The band played the Royal march—& we gave their R. Highnesses chairs close to the dancing to amuse them. The Bittern sailors had stretched a sail on the tennis ground thus making a splendid floor. After the Princes had watched the dancing we gave them refreshments apart in the little tent. They returned to the dancing for a short time & then departed highly contented. Between some of the dances the sailors of the Bittern sang some choruses wh was a novelty & an amusement. By 8 every one had gone & we got a late dinner. | |
