15 August 1879 — Therapia
Friday. 15th [August 1879]. We went off at 10 oclock to the Prinkipo Regatta. We took the Dicksons & all the Embassy, Capt. Swaine & the 6 student Dragomen & went in the Antelope. We stopped at Top-khaneh & picked up Eda d’Ehrenhoff & Mlle Waldstrom. We got to the islands while the races were going on & anchored. It was a very pretty sight tho’ there were not so many fine ships there as we had last year. The German Ambr was there– We had the “Faun” & the “Bittern” besides the Antelope & there was the Sultan’s yacht with the young Princes, & Hobart & his yacht. At abt 1 we had luncheon & then afterwards Henry & I went to call on the little Princes. While we were there (accompanied by Blanche) Munir Bey arrived from Consple. He said he was at the salaamlik when the Sultan asked him why he was there & he ordered him to take a steam launch & to go off & join the Princes. From there we went on board the Faun to see the dancing & stayed there some little time when presently the little Princes arrived there to return our visit & we took them up on the poop from whence they were amused to watch the dancing. Then one of the officers took them round the ship taking the smallest one up in his arms to carry him down the steep steps. When they were gone, Hobart P. & Mr Smijth came & begged us to stay for the fireworks. We said that we were going home for dinner but they insisted so much that at last I returned to the Antelope to arrange with Giovanni abt getting some meal & to provide us with dinner wh was no easy matter as we were to be abt 23 at table. Nelly Hatzfeldt came with her father to call on us so we made her remain with us & promised to send her home tomorrow. We got our dinner rather late but very good & afterwards went on deck to see the illuminations & fireworks. The island looked very pretty but the fireworks were very poor & we left abt 9.30 to return home. Saïd P. (English Said) who was staying at the Islands came on board & dined with us & we stopped to drop him at his house on the Bosphorus. We stopped again at Arnaut Keui to drop the student dragomen and were obliged to carry on Eda & Miss Waldstrom with us & find beds for them & for Nelly. After dinner on the way home Lady Dickson & I being very tired we retired to rest in the cabins. The others all amused themselves with singing over “Pinafore.” We got home nearer 1 than 12 oclock.
