27 September 1879 — Damascus
Saturday. 27th September [1879]. We went out in the morng to the Bazaars to try & buy silk & then went to the Great Mosque wh was originally the Church of St John. The stones are quite bright & polished even in the court yard by the numbers of people who have walked bare footed or in stockings. We saw the tomb of Sulyman the magnificent. We went to the silversmith’s Bazaar, & to the home of the German consul where we went on the roof to see the remains of a Greek Temple wh had been built into a neighbouring house. It was excessively hot. We went into the house wh was a charming one & we saw a lovely cat there with wh I made friends—& Wassif immediately said he would get me one to take home. We returned home to lunch & had a visit from Midhat who sat talking a long time with Henry. Then Henry & I drove out in Midhat’s carriage to go & call on Abdul Kader at his house in the town. He & his two sons received us—& Alice & I were taken to the Harem. The women were very ordinary looking & were so silent that we did not remain. They have a lovely house with beautiful courts with fountains & oranges. Abdul Kadr is a fine old man & looks wonderfully young. He appeared to be very suffering & was very emaciated. His son spoke French very well. We went to visit Mr Jago the consul’s house & then went home. Midhat P. & Wassif dined with us & left us early as we had to go off tomorrow morning at 5 A.M.
