10 October 1879 — Scio
Friday. 10th October [1879]. We had to get up at 6 A.M. so as to start at 8 for Smyrna. Henry, Alice & I had breakfast in the harem & then rode down on mules to the pier. Mme Sadyk was most kind & even came to say good bye to Henry saying that as her husband regarded him as a brother she did not mind seeing him unveiled. She is a very distinguished woman with perfect manners & a very nice countenance. We steamed off at 8 oclock & had a very fine passage to Smyrna which we reached abt 4 oclock. There was some delay on our arrival as the Governor did not wish to come on board to pay the first visit to Henry. It was finally settled that Henry should land & go to the Consulate to receive the Pasha. We landed & were recd by a guard of honor & went to the Consulate. Henry’s old friend Mr Dennis is the New Consul. His wife was very nice. The Govr came after a time & then Henry returned the visit. We ladies returned on board & then dressed & went to dine at the Consulate & then met the Pasha & his secretary—returned on board at 11.30.
