9 January 1880 — Constantinople
Friday. 9th [January 1880]. Cut out jackets. After luncheon I went out to call for Mme Helmy P. & to be introduced to Mme Cabouli P. who lived 3 doors off. She amused me very much—talks very amusing French. She showed me some jewelry she wished to sell. We drove afterwards to the German Embassy where I left cards for Mrs Tyrell & then we took a drive on the Taksim road but we did not get far on acct of the snow & bad roads. Then I went in & sat with Mme Helmy & had tea with her before I came home. Mme Serkis & Mme Allaverde called on me– Had the children to school. After dinner Alice & I went to Mrs Sartoris’ room to join in the little musical party. The Schlumbergers were there also Mr Caillard, a Col Verequin a Russian who played the violin– We stayed there till 12.
