17 February 1880 — Constantinople
Tuesday. 17th [February 1880]. We had our great Ministerial dinner & sat down 25 at table. I had Saïd P. the Grand Vizier on my right & Safvet P. on my left. They all seemed to enjoy themselves & drank plenty of wine. Some tasted the [illegible word] wh was placed on the table before them & made wry faces over it. Munir Bey, Hobart P., Parnis Effi, [illegible word] were amongst those who dined. After dinner Mrs Hobart came having been dining at the secretaries mess. Munir B. taught me to play the game of Petchiz wh the Sultan sent me a few days ago. It is a Circassian game played in the Royal Harem & is somewhat like our game of steeple chase.
