24 February 1880 — Constantinople
Tuesday. 24th [February 1880]. It was very cold and we even had a little snow. Henry had a meeting of the Corps. Dip. on some business & afterwards most of the gentlemen came in to see me viz Ittersum, Mantilla, Ehrenhoff & Christich. Then came Mme Mantilla bringing with her Mme Camara to pay me a visit. Mme C. fancied there was some split between us & Mme Mantilla brought her to make up. Mr & Mrs Clifton, Mr Wallace & Mr Smijth dined with us. The Mr & Mrs Smythe of the Ottoman bank were prevented coming thro her indisposition. Some played dominoes while Mrs Clifton talked 15 to the dozen to me & nearly sent me to sleep. Giovanni worked himself up into a rage over an impertinent hamal & Mr St John was called in to smoothe it down.
