24 March 1880 — Constantinople
Wednesday. 24th [March 1880]. It began by being fine but snow storms came on & in the afternoon we had a settled snowstorm wh lasted all night. I had my painting lesson. Little Kathleen Hanson came & I began her portrait besides placing on the large canvass the figure of the Circassian girl. Henry went to the Sultan directly after breakfast & returned abt 3. I read in the afternoon & it was such bad weather that no one came. Henry had a meeting of the Corps Dip: & in the meanwhile Hobart came from the Ct Martial of Kummerau’s assassin & he read it to me. It was to condemn him to the galères for life the Dr not being sure he was mad. Henry came out from the meeting to hear abt it & it appears that when he went back & told some of them there was general indignation & Henry had to get Hobart to say he wd have the sentence reconsidered. The Russian Govt threatened to withdraw their Embassy & all the others said they wd take up the matter. Hatzfeldt, Ittersum & the Persian Ambr came to tea with me & there was much whispering & going to & fro in the matter. Ittersum, Mr Nicolson & Sartoris dined with us—& there was dominos.
