3 April 1880 — Constantinople | |
Saturday. 3rd April [1880]. I sent for Kathleen & worked at her portrait all the morng. Alice & Arthur B & Aimée d’Ehrenhoff went out riding with Capt. Swaine before our lunch. At 2.30 Henry & I went out driving in the Victoria but found it very cold. We went to the Sweet Waters but found no trace of spring. We got out of the carriage & walked a bit & in the Valley it was a little warmer. Had visit from Mrs Fawcett & had a talk about the robberies that had happened at the consulate & here– Hobart P. called having just come from the Sultan whom he found in a dreadful state at the turn of the Elections in England & Hobart said he had told him it was a bad look out for Turkey– Montgelas called & did not seem either very happy– I asked him how he wd like to see Gladstone in power after all the civil things he had said lately of Austria. He laughed & said they did not mind much but they attached more importance to Ld Hartington’s declarations. The eveng telegram tell us of more Liberal successes & says Eng: papers talk of a Hartington Granville Gladstone Govt. Capt. Swaine dined with us & Mme Livadari, Sigr Marchese a della Tolla & Mr Sartoris came & we did the Requiem thro’– | |
