16 May 1880 — Therapia
Sunday. 16th May [1880]. Service in the morng & a great many of the Rapid Sailors were there the Antelope being away. After lunch the Gregorys, Henry & I went off in the launch to Scutari. It was a lovely day. We landed & went up to the cemetery wh was looking beautiful. The Judas trees there were splendid. After walking thro’ we sent the cavass for a carriage; he got one that looked as if it wd hold 2 but pretended to 4 we all squeezed in & went up to the Turkish burying ground wh is certainly wonderfully curious & weird. The cypresses are thickly planted & at their feet rise the stones that mark the thousands of graves. Many have fallen– In many the graves are open & empty & the stones stand up over it. The wide road thro’ the cemetery was the only route into Asia Minor before the days of rail & Henry said he had set out along that road the first time he set out on his Eastern travels– We walked down to the launch preferring to dismiss our narrow carriage. We made tea on the way home. We remarked with regret how much damage the last winter had done to all the Turkish houses & the Turks were evidently too poor to repair them. We had to dine Col. Shouldham, Capt. Mann, Mr Ashburnham, Sir A. Sandison, Mr & Mrs Washington, Lieut. Berkeley (of Rapid), Arthur Burr, Gregorys.
